Van Gerwen ‘retiring at 40’

New world champion Michael van Gerwen has claimed he plans to retire from darts aged 40.

The Dutchman won the World Darts Championship last weekend for the second time, triumphing 7-3 over defending champion Gary Anderson in the final to extend his growing legacy.

Asked by Sky Sports News HQ if he will still play into his 50s like Phil Taylor, Van Gerwen responded: “No chance, not even close.

“I’m going retire before. I’ll probably stop when I’m 40. I think so, if I have [achieved] all my goals.
