No PL names in UEFA team of 2016

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been voted into the UEFA Team of Year for 2016 but no Premier League players have been included.

The XI was voted for by UEFA.com users from a shortlist that included the likes of Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Riyad Mahrez, but none of the 11 English league players made the final cut. 

Other notable omissions include Neymar, Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale, with eight of the 11 players coming from La Liga, two from Serie A and one from the Bundesliga.

Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)

It was another trophy-laden season for Juventus and their captain Buffon, picking up their fifth consecutive Serie A title and set two league records for the most number of consecutive clean sheets (10) and the longest period of time without conceding a goal (974 minutes). 

For Italy, he appeared at his 11th major competition at Euro 2016 and continues to add appearances heading into the World Cup 2018 qualifiers as the most capped player for Italy. 

Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid)

Ramos collected the most amount of votes of any player to feature in the UEFA Team of the Year, appearing in 75 per cent of the teams selected by voters with 488,908 votes cast for his inclusion.

He continues to lead by example at Real Madrid, captaining the side to Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup glory, as well as notching up 140 caps for Spain – second behind Iker Casillas.

Gerard Pique (Barcelona)

Pique continues to perform for Barcelona, and picked up La Liga and Copa del Rey titles for his troubles during the 2015/16 campaigns with 30 appearances during the league season. 

He also featured in his sixth successive international tournament for Spain as well as starting in all four games and netted a late winner against the Czech Republic in the opening fixture.
