Atletico Madrid’s La Liga title challenge came to a shocking end on Sunday, as the Rojiblancos lost 2-1 to Levante. The result leaves manager Diego Simeone’s troops three points behind Barcelona, who hold the superior head-to-head record and can no longer be overtaken by Atletico.  

The Catalans cruised to a 5-0 win over city rivals Espanyol, with Luis Suarez scoring a brace, while Real Madrid narrowly beat Valencia 3-2 thanks to two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fernando Torres continued his superb scoring form by opening the scoring for Atletico just minutes into their match against Levante. Koke played a perfectly weighted pass in behind the defence, and El Nino patiently waited for goalkeeper Diego Marino to get low before producing a fine chip.

Per ESPN FC’s Dermot Corrigan, the goal was his 10th league of the season, a mark he hadn’t hit in some time:

First time Torres has scored 10 league goals in a season since 2009-10 at Liverpool.
