Nationals getting post-purchase reinforcement on Strasburg deal

WASHINGTON – It’s only been three starts, but so far that $175 million the Washington Nationals dropped on Stephen Strasburg is looking like money well spent.
On Tuesday, Strasburg stifled a New York Mets lineup that went off for seven runs a day earlier, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out 11 over 6 2/3 innings. It was his third win in three tries since May 10, when the Nats announced that they’d signed Strasburg to that lucrative contract extension.
In 10 starts on the season, Strasburg is now 8-0, tying him with some guy named Jake Arrieta for the most wins without a loss. Just for good measure, the two times he’s gotten a no-decision the Nats have won as well. In fact, going back to last season, Washington has won 14 straight games in which Strasburg was the starting pitcher. That’s a Nats/Expos franchise record, and the second-longest active streak in baseball (again, that Arrieta guy, with 22).
And those wins aren’t just any old wins. Half have come after a Nationals loss, and 11 have come against National League East rivals. His mastery of the Mets on Tuesday fit both criteria.
