Mariners’ 16 runs at Safeco ties club record

SEATTLE — The Mariners made a lot of noise with their bats in a 16-4 rout of the Padres in the getaway game of this short two-game series on Tuesday.

They also made a bit of history.

The resurgent Seattle offense carved out another paragraph in team annals by equaling the record for single-game offensive output at Safeco Field. They scored 16 runs at their home ballpark for the fourth time since its opening in 1999, having also accomplished the feat twice in the 116-win season of 2001 (Aug. 22 vs. Detroit, Oct. 4 vs. Texas) and once in 2002 (April 22 vs. the Angels).
