Tigers to use Greene out of bullpen

DETROIT — Shane Greene won the fifth spot in the Tigers’ rotation out of Spring Training, but his season began with an Opening Day save at Miami. After a month on the disabled list, his season will continue with more late-inning situations out of the bullpen.

The Tigers activated Greene from the 15-day disabled list after Friday’s win over the White Sox in order to put the right-hander into the bullpen. It doesn’t settle the debate over whether Greene fits best long term as a starter or reliever, but for now, he fits the Tigers’ pitching staff best in relief.

The way the Tigers’ bullpen has been going, that fit is likely to include some late-inning leads to protect.

“Probably sixth, seventh inning, right around there,” manager Brad Ausmus said, “maybe eighth depending on who needs rest, who’s coming up, etc.”

Greene’s shift is intended to shore up a bullpen that was revamped last offseason, especially on the setup end. But Mark Lowe has struggled since signing a two-year contract as a free agent last December. The veteran righty entered Saturday with 15 runs on 19 hits over 17 1/3 innings, walking nine and striking out 16.
