Maddon: Any trade needs to be an obvious fit

CHICAGO — Cubs manager Joe Maddon is looking forward to getting Dexter Fowler, Jorge Soler and Trevor Cahill back from the disabled list. He’s also curious about reliever Joe Nathan, who could join the team as early as this weekend. But as far as acquiring a player before the Aug. 1 non-waiver Trade Deadline, Maddon is aware that whoever it is has to be a good fit.
“The ‘fitting in’ component is very big,” Maddon said Tuesday. “When you do something like that, it has to be obvious that the guy is going to help.”
Maddon has had instances where his team has acquired a player, and it wasn’t an upgrade.
“You want to bring somebody in who’s physically talented and fits what you’re looking for, and beyond that, fits, period,” he said.
