Premier League sides were in the goals as they stepped up their pre-season preparations on Saturday, while David Moyes watched his new Sunderland team warm up with a win.

Moyes – confirmed as Sam Allardyce’s successor in the morning – travelled to Rotherham’s New York Stadium in the afternoon to see his new players beat the Championship side 2-1, posing for pictures with fans before taking his seat in the stands.

A bleached-haired Fabio Borini had put Sunderland ahead in South Yorkshire with a 29th-minute half-volley but Jerry Yates responded seconds after the restart, lashing beyond substitute goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

A string of changes for both sides disrupted the tempo but Charles N’Zogbia, who had teed up Borini’s opener, got on the scoresheet himself to seal the win, prodding beyond Lee Camp with just four minutes remaining.

New signing Jordon Ibe opened his account for Bournemouth during a six-goal thriller at Portsmouth’s Fratton Park.

The hosts took the lead against their south-coast rivals from the Premier League after just four minute when Gary Roberts slotted beyond Adam Federici.

Lewis Grabban tapped in an equaliser (24) but Pompey restored their lead just a minute later, Michael Smith pouncing when Enda Stevens’ strike deflected kindly.

Ibe, a £15m summer signing from Liverpool, hauled the Cherries level again when he dropped a shoulder and cut inside before rifling low into the bottom corner.
