Kathleen Dawson Makes Maiden Sub-2:10 Voyage For British Summer Crown

Kathleen Dawson, Warrington Warriors, raced into the world top 30 with the swim of the day at the British summer nationals in Sheffield this evening, a 2:09.62 win in the 200m backstroke lifting her into the world top 30 this year.

The teenager produced fine breakthrough efforts on backstroke at Olympic trials in April but missed the cut for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games by a small margin. She then raced at the European Championships and made the podium in the 100m alongside champion Mie Nielsen (DEN) and Katinka Hosszu (HUN), both medal contenders at the Olympics.

The win at Ponds Forge over four laps today marked a maiden voyage not only inside 2:10 but 2:11 too, her previous best a 2:11.81 from the semi-finals of the 200m at the European Championships in London in May.  Out in 31.53, Dawson turned in 1:05.33 at half-way, reached the last turn in 1:38.37 and produced a last lap of 31.45, her fastest length of the race. …
