Young activated, starts in left for Red Sox

ST. PETERSBURG — The Red Sox have activated outfielder Chris Young from the 15-day disabled list and optioned left-hander Henry Owens to Triple-A Pawtucket. The move was announced before Boston’s game against the Rays at Tropicana Field on Monday.
He started in left field Monday and hit seventh. With rookie Andrew Benintendi providing production since his promotion, Young’s role will likely be starting against lefties, pinch-hitting and starting when a regular needs a day off.
“Obviously with today’s alignment, it gives us a chance to rest a guy on a given day against a left-handed starter [Blake Snell],” Boston manager John Farrell said. “We’re seeing that unfold on his first day back.”
Owens made a spot start Sunday, allowing eight earned runs in five innings against the Tigers. …
