Minna Atherton, Jack Cartwright Jumpstart Aussies AS Junior Pan Pacs Open

It will not ease the sting associated with a subpar showing at the Olympic Games, but Australia had reason to celebrate some rising talent on Thursday night, the opening day of the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Maui. Coming off a 10-medal showing at the Rio Games, the Aussies watched youngsters Minna Atherton and Jack Cartwright excel in Hawaii.

Although she was a little more than a second off her world junior record, Atherton prevailed in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.45, holding off a late charge by American Lucie Nordmann (1:00.55).
