Living up to her new-found reputation as the fastest woman on the planet, Elaine Thompson won the 100m in 10.78 (0.8) at the Athletissima meeting in Lausanne on Thursday as GB’s Desiree Henry finished fourth in 11.17.
The sprinters endured a faulty start where most competitors did not hear the recall gun and ended up completing the whole distance, but once they got underway for the second time the Jamaican ran out a convincing winner.
Genzebe Dibaba was back to winning ways in the women’s 3000m as the Ethiopian unleashed a 57.47 final 400m to beat Olympic 5000m silver medallist Hellen Obiri. Dibaba, the world 1500m record-holder, was beaten in the metric mile in Rio but here clocked a meeting record of 8:31.84.
There was more excellent running in the men’s 1000m as Ayanleh Souleiman ran the fifth fastest time for the distance in history with 2:13.50. The race was billed as a showdown between Olympic 1500m champion Matt Centrowitz and world champion Asbel Kiprop but the American was only sixth and the Kenyan fourth as Kenya’s Robert Biwott was second …
